Affect Academics has been chosen to present at the annual conference in October for the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England (ATMNE). Our topic is Overcoming Math Anxiety. In 2011, I presented at the Association for Teachers of Mathematics in Maine on a highly related topic: Math Anxiety: the effects of emotion on cognition. While the talk was well-received, the most common response was “yes yes, you’ve convinced me, now what do I do about it?” And I didn’t have enough of an answer. I’ve spent the last few years trying to to sort that out.
We’ve assembled a list of non-cognitive skills, mounted social-psychological interventions, started Mindful Learning classes, and employed techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy. Much of the research is covered in our handbook for parents and teachers (downloadable here), but this will be a great opportunity to synthesize it all and reach, through their teachers, a much larger student population.
I’m excited!!
